4EVER

4EVER, for Enhanced Video ExpeRience

4EVER (for Enhanced Video ExpeRience) is designed to offer a better quality of video Experience for the spectator and democratize access to content audiovisual premium, for all people and in any situation (houses, mobile, contained alternative cinemas). This project is set around 2 main themes of R&D:

  • HEVC, the future standard MPEG/ITU designed to replace H.264/MPEG-4 AVC with a factor of 2 reduction in code rate. therefore an essential tool to reach people currently accessing SD. It’s also an indispensable tool to transmit HD quality video over wireless networks, for mobile devices like smartphones or tablets now often have HD screens.
  • UHD, Ultra High definition: new formats (such as 4K) appear but are still not really defined nor qualified. Improvement in spatial resolution, temporal frequency and color information will be key to achieve a true immersion, a new quality experience. The huge amount of data associated with this future UHD format requires the introduction of HEVC to envisage network transmission.

The main results from 4EVER will be prototype HEVC codecs and contributions to the definition of the UHD format. This will both require subjective assessments to validate the gain made by HEVC to qualify the gain made by the UHD vs. the HD.
In addition to the scientific and technical collaborations, the 9 partners of the consortium will regularly validate the advances of the field work. They will implement end-to-end channels for recordings/releases from HD and UHD content, developed from prototype HEVC codecs. The balance sheets of these operations will help adjust the remaining R&D work to realize the project.
