NEUROSYLLABIC

More than 1 in 1000 children born severely or profoundly deaf in our country. In the vast majority of the cases (90%), these children are raised by normal-hearing parents who opt for a mode of education emphasizing oral communication. Today, these children access to oral communication is facilitated by the cochlear implant. Medico-technical quality in the cochlear implant patient follow-up is also essential for the improvement of the hearing and the development or restoration of this oral communication.
The NEUROSYLLABIC project has two main objectives:
– Propose a system of adjustment of the cochlear implant based on new tools of neurophysiological measures not requiring the active participation of the patient. Automated, this system will significantly reduce the time spent in the hospital, and will allow the explorations on patients unable to communicate (including very young children).
– Develop new tools of rehabilitation in the form of games (serious games) for the cochlear implanted deaf child. These tools will be made available to medical, paramedical team and the families of patients in order to optimize the use of the implants.
These two objectives will be achieved through the implementation of two interdependent modules that make up a single tool of cochlear implanted patients.
Neurosyllabic will permit savings of over 3M€ over 3 years for the French health care system:

  • A reduction of setup time spent for each child by about 25% and as a consequence an economy of 1 454K€
  • A reduction in implantation failures by a better diagnosis estimated at 1 670K€ (25% of the 5% of failures avoided and valued at 40K€)
  • An overall increase in the patient outcomes through better optimization of settings (difficult to assess economic impact).
  • A significant increase in turnover for industrial partners
